Who doesn’t love a good old celebrity makeover? Admittedly there is always a part of me that secretly loves it when they go wrong – we need to see they’re still human, right? – but there is nothing quite like seeing our favourite celebrity stepping out on the red carpet after giving their appearance a once-over for the better.
It is also a very brave thing to do in a lot of cases, so we have our favourite celebs to thank for giving us the courage to take the plunge for our next big change-up, whether it be a more extreme hair cut, a bright new lipstick or even a quirky outfit we never thought we’d wear before.
Here are just a few of my particular favourites…
1. Sarah Jessica Parker
I just had to start this list with the honorary Sarah Jessica Parker, who also happens to be one of my favourite makeover geniuses of all time. This is mainly down to the fact that she has managed to consistently adapt her look to stay in tune with the fashion of the times, acting like much more of a fashion innovator than a follower. But my goodness when you look back over the decades, there are certainly some noticeable differences when it comes to the looks themselves. I would definitely recommend spending a good afternoon browsing through Google and marvelling at her weird and wonderful creative looks.

2. Ryan Gosling
Ah, Ryan Gosling. Where do we begin? We are definitely not saying there was necessarily anything wrong with your youthful, less polished good looks but when you have gone and turned into the inescapably handsome, groomed and altogether stunning man that you are now, it just has to be talked about. If you had help with this from a stylist, they certainly need to be found and thanked immensely by the female population of the world. Good job!

3. Kelly Osbourne
Perhaps on of the most widely recognized makeovers of recent years, Kelly Osbourne has very much left behind the days of gothic make-up, punky clothes and a general feeling of not yet having found her signature style. Low and behold, she emerged in 2011 a reformed starlet with an altogether more stunning old-style Hollywood look. In truly Kelly O style, her hair colour has very much been subject to change as the years have gone by but the confidence of her reformed look has remained the same.

4. Jonah Hill
Ever the yo-yo dieter, Jonah Hill has always adopted more of portly physique in his movies and we have always very much loved him for it. However, when he got offered his most prestigious role to date in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street in 2014, he decided it was time for a change, evidently paying a lot more attention to his health and fitness which showed in the very healthy weight loss he displayed at the red carpet premieres.

5. Miley Cyrus
Ok so it might not exactly be everyone’s preferred look for Miley but there is absolutely no way it can be denied that her extreme blonde crop gained her the notoriety and success that classes her as one of the most successful female pop artists in the world right now. Was a part of me upset when she cut off her beautiful long tresses? Yes. Did I let it hold me back from embracing her more grown-up ‘anti-Disney’ self? No. It took a while but we are totally digging Miley’s edgier look.

6. Michelle Williams
Definitely one of the most successful actresses to come out of 90s TV sensation Dawson’s Creek, Michelle Williams has showed us all how to go from a subdued teen star to a bonafied A-list screen goddess, even starring as the legendary Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn in 2011. As if she needed to prove her style credentials any more, she even went on to pull off the elusive ‘Pixie Crop’ haircut, showing us all how it’s done.

7. Penélope Cruz
I know, it doesn’t seem possible that Penélope Cruz could ever have been anything other than stunningly beautiful, especially when you look at her now. But hallelujah, it is great to hear that she took some time to find herself like the rest of us, which is all the more evident looking back at her looks from the 80s and 90s. Isn’t it amazing what a good blowdry and – dare I say it – a pair of tweezers can do?

8. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has come a very long way from her Princess Diaries days, which was even more exemplified when she was chosen to star in the 2012 remake of Les Misérables, taking the incredibly brave step to shave her head for the role. And you know what, she pulled it off and actually kept the ‘Pixie Crop’ for the rest of awards season, receiving critical acclaim from all of her fashion peers.

9. Emma Watson
We couldn’t have a makeover list without including Hogwart’s very own Hermione Granger a.k.a Emma Watson, a.k.a one of the most elegant, beautiful stars of our time. Not only has Emma showed us that she can transition from an adorably freckled little child star into a serious actress and model (also taking on the ‘Pixie Cut’), but she has also showed enough will and grace to recently become a UN Ambassador for sexual equality. Definitely a role that needs to exude class and sophistication at all times. Well done Emma, you nailed it.

10. The Olsen Twins
Last off, we need to reserve a special mention for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, whose very early introduction to the limelight (at aged 6 months!) has afforded them to opportunity to become fashion-forward, innovative style mavens. They even went ahead and became fashion students and designers to prove it all the more. Quite a far stretch from the wholesome girl next door days we had become so used to but we – and the rest of the fashion world – cannot get enough.
