Best Sad but Romantic Films

Have you ever had that moment when you tried to watch a romantic movie but ended up feeling empty and exhausted from crying? Movies that we did not expect to linger in our thoughts and hearts for the story that left us with lessons about love and life, like the movies in this list that made us really sad.

1. A Walk To Remember

It was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry”

The original sound track of the movie was really on point because we left cinemas with our eyes were all puffy from crying. This movie adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s novel is one for the books. It left us feeling empty, but at the same time happy that Jamie (Mandy Moore) who had a few months left to live, had happy moments with Landon (Shane West). Still it is so unfair that when she found happiness, she died.

2. The Fault In Our Stars

Okay? Okay.”

We are not Okay! How can we be okay after watching this movie? A novel by John Green was adapted into a film and made Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus Walters (Ansel Elgort) story come to life. Two teens with cancer that experienced love before the end of their days. A heartbreaking story but the kind of love story that taught us to love and appreciate life before it’s too late.

3. The Vow

“I hope one day I can love the way that you love me.”
“You figured it out once — you’ll do it again.”

It made us cry when Leo (Channing Tatum) finally let go his wife Paige (Rachel McAdams) after the last attempt in getting her memory (and feelings..) back. How can he say goodbye to the woman he loves that can’t even remember him? That was so heartbreaking. You suddenly want to rewind everything and warn them about their future. But if it’s true love, it will always find a way to get back to you. Right Leo?

4. Me Before You

I have become a whole new person because of you.”

This is a movie adaptation from Jojo Moyes novel. We became a whole new person after watching this movie and felt like life is so unfair to both of them. Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke) and Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) were an unlikely pair that found love for each other and found a purpose in their lives. “Just live well. Just live.” And she did live for both of them.

5. The Notebook

“That’s my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is, that’s where my home is.”

Another Nicholas Sparks’ novel that was adapted into a movie. The Notebook is one ultimate romantic film that we can’t stop watching even years after it was released. Allie Hamilton’s (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun’s (Ryan Gosling) story is about love that was lost and love that found each other again. The ending will make you believe that nothing can’t keep two individuals apart.

6. Romeo + Juliet

Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn.”

Romeo (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) met in a Capulet’s party and fell in love instantly. But their love was not an easy one, with their families as rival clans there’s no room for reconciliation, how can they fight for their love? This is a take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and you will fall in love with their love, no matter how tragic it is. It’s the kind of “you and me against the world” type of love.

7. My Girl

Wanna go tree climbing Thomas J? His face hurts! Where are his glasses, he can’t see without his glasses. He was gunna be an acrobat!”

Tears poured down when Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) suddenly had a breakdown during her best friend, Thomas J . Sennett’s (Macaulay Culkin) funeral. This film is not like the other films in this list. This is more of pure and innocent kind of love of a girl and a boy and to the people around her. A phase in the life of a young girl with so many questions in her life that she needed to answer.

8. Titanic

Never let go.”

I’ll never let go. I’ll never let go, Jack.”

It was 1995 when this epic romantic-disaster film crushed our hearts, but also gave us a love crush on young Leo. The story of Jack Dawson (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and the tragedy from RMS Titanic will always be forever in our hearts. The scene in the middle of the ocean where Rose finally let Jack go and the last part with the older version of Rose dreaming of the Titanic and Jack are the most memorable scenes in the movie.

9. Ghost

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me”

Unchained Melody forever haunts us and reminds us about the story of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) and the love of Sam for his girlfriend as he tried to save her from danger. The pottery wheel scene and the chemistry between the actors are what makes this film a “sleeper” hit. The saddest part was the last goodbye of Sam to Molly, as he gave her a last kiss before leaving her.

“I love you Molly. I always have.”

“Ditto.”

10. Brokeback Mountain

I wish I knew how to quit you.”

This is a story of two men who can’t be together but fall in love together. Jack Twist’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar’s (Heath Ledger) story is one we will remember because of the kind of love they had for each other. One painful scene is when Ennis visited Jack’s childhood home after his death and found their old shirt that was hanging in a wood closet. The deception to their wives and hiding their real feelings also made this movie one of the saddest romantic films.
